Bangkok's inexpensive local meals do not make every food budget inexpensive. The difference is often how frequently you add coffee, delivery, imported groceries and social meals. Price your normal week, including those extras, before choosing a monthly allowance.

A restaurant meal and a supermarket shop are also not directly interchangeable. Groceries may provide several meals, but a short stay can involve buying oil, seasoning and equipment that you will not finish using.

Turn daily habits into a monthly figure

The amounts below are hypothetical daily spending targets for one person, not surveyed meal prices.

Average daily food spendingThirty-day budget
THB 250THB 7,500
THB 400THB 12,000
THB 650THB 19,500

The THB 400 target must cover the whole day if it is to produce a THB 12,000 food budget. If breakfast is excluded or weekend dinners come from another account, your actual total is higher.

Does cooking save money?

It depends on the ingredients, portions and kitchen available. Cooking local produce in batches can be economical, while buying imported ingredients for one person may not beat a simple prepared meal. Compare the same amount of food rather than a small street-food portion against a substantial home-cooked dinner.

For a useful test, record seven days of groceries and prepared meals. Include food delivery charges and drinks, and subtract only supplies that will clearly last beyond the month. Repeat the exercise after you have settled into a routine.

Leave space for the food you actually want

A strict local-food budget can be unrealistic if you know you regularly want particular dairy products, coffee or international meals. Give those purchases an explicit allowance instead of assuming you will stop wanting them after moving.

Reddit budgets illustrate how eating patterns can differ even among people living near the same transport lines. Use those accounts to identify categories, not to tell yourself that your own preferences are financially irrelevant.

Frequently asked questions

Is eating out always cheaper than cooking in Bangkok?

No. The result depends on ingredients, portion size and where you eat. Compare a complete week of equivalent meals, including drinks and delivery fees, rather than one unusually cheap dish.

What daily budget produces THB 12,000 a month?

THB 400 per day over 30 days. That is arithmetic, not a guarantee of a particular diet. Track your actual spending to see whether your preferred meals fit within it.

Should coffee and alcohol be included?

Include them somewhere explicit. You can keep alcohol in a leisure category, but it must still appear in the overall budget. Otherwise comparisons with other people's food totals become misleading.
