Living near rail can be worth paying extra for, but only when it serves journeys you actually make. Your monthly transport cost depends on frequency, route and the trips required before or after the train. A station near your home does not automatically mean a convenient route to work.

Use the BTS route and fare tools and the MRT fare calculator for your specific journey. Then add non-work travel separately.

Calculate your normal commuting month

A useful starting point is the return fare multiplied by the number of office days. Add feeder journeys, occasional taxis and personal trips. The example below is hypothetical and does not quote an official fare.

ExampleMonthly amount
THB 100 return journey × 22 daysTHB 2,200
THB 40 daily last-mile travel × 22 daysTHB 880
Personal journeys and occasional taxisTHB 1,000
TotalTHB 4,080

Ignoring the last-mile expense would understate this example by THB 880. Working remotely several days a week would change the calculation again.

Compare rent plus transport

If a nearer apartment costs THB 2,000 more but saves only THB 800 in fares, it is not cheaper in cash terms. It may still be worthwhile for the time saved. Keep the financial comparison and the convenience decision separate so you can judge both clearly.

Test the route at the times you expect to travel. Consider the walk, transfers and your willingness to take it in rain or heat. An apartment that looks close on a map can lead to frequent ride-hailing if the practical route is inconvenient.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for Bangkok transport?

Calculate your actual routes rather than using one figure for the whole city. Include workdays, weekend journeys, late trips and connections to rail. A remote worker and a daily commuter have different requirements.

Does a cheaper suburban apartment save money?

It can, but compare the rent saving with the full increase in travel costs. Include the number of journeys you will really make. The extra travel time is a separate consideration.

Can I plan a budget without owning a car?

Yes. Build the budget around the public transport and paid journeys available for your routine. If taxis remain necessary for particular activities, include them rather than treating them as exceptional every month.
