FOUR COUNTRIES · FOUR DISTINCT TESTS

Compare the starting points.

Day thresholds are useful but never enough to calculate personal tax. Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia have other qualifying tests; Thailand also taxes certain Thai-source income.

DestinationHeadline day thresholdImportant exception or alternativeFull guide
Thailand180 days in tax yearThe Revenue Department's older English overview uses 'more than 180 days' in one location, while the current section 41 wording and the 2024 explanatory guidance say '180 days or more'. Do not rely on an unverified one-day shortcut.Explore ↗
Vietnam183 days + residence rulesVietnam's Law 109/2025/QH15 came into force on 1 July 2026; specified income-tax provisions for salaries and business income relate to the 2026 tax year. A guide using only the earlier seven-bracket system may be stale.Explore ↗
Bali / IndonesiaMore than 183 days in 12 monthsA limited four-tax-year treatment for certain qualifying foreign experts with specific skills does not create a blanket exemption for all expatriates or all remote workers. Eligibility and the source of income must be carefully verified.Explore ↗
Malaysia182 days + linked periodsForeign source and Malaysian source are not decided solely by who pays a salary. Employment physically exercised in Malaysia and treaty claims may need distinct treatment, including LHDN's 2026 ruling for foreign nationals.Explore ↗
CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION

In-depth tax guides by country.

Tax residence is not the same as immigration residence

A visa, an apartment lease and a number of days are different forms of evidence. An employment contract may affect income sourcing; pensions and dividends can follow separate treaty provisions. You can meet more than one domestic residence definition and may then need a treaty analysis.

Do not compare tax rates without a common fact pattern

For a meaningful comparison, record where services are physically performed, each income category and source, taxes already paid, your entry dates, home-country obligations and whether foreign earnings are received in your destination. A high marginal rate is not an effective rate and a foreign-income exemption is not the same as all income being untaxed.
