Vietnam Personal Income Tax Calculator 2026: Rates and Limits

A correct payroll calculation requires taxable income after applicable deductions, the proper tax period, and a resident/nonresident classification. A bracket chart by itself is not a personal tax bill.

The starting point for Vietnam

Vietnam tax residence can arise with 183 days or more of presence in a calendar year or relevant consecutive 12-month period, or under specified habitual residence or housing arrangements. Do not rely only on days.

Resident individuals are generally assessed on relevant income earned in Vietnam and abroad; nonresidents on certain Vietnam-source income. The applicable classification, withholding and double-tax relief require checking.

Vietnam's Law 109/2025/QH15 came into force on 1 July 2026; specified income-tax provisions for salaries and business income relate to the 2026 tax year. A guide using only the earlier seven-bracket system may be stale.

QUESTION 01

What are the 2026 employment brackets?

The Ministry of Finance publishes monthly taxable-income bands of VND 0–10m (5%), >10–30m (10%), >30–60m (20%), >60–100m (30%) and >100m (35%).

Practical next step: Record your presence dates and which year the rule addresses.
QUESTION 02

Why not multiply gross salary by a single percentage?

Progressive bands apply marginal rates to portions of taxable income. Reliefs and exemptions may reduce the base.

Practical next step: List every relevant income type separately.
QUESTION 03

Does it apply to nonresidents?

Do not reuse the resident schedule for a nonresident without checking distinct rules.

Practical next step: Collect written evidence of the facts and any tax already paid.
QUESTION 04

What about bonuses?

Payroll regularity, allowances, taxable benefits and bonuses affect the relevant taxable amount and withholding.

Practical next step: Check the relevant residence, source and treaty provisions.
QUESTION 05

Can a quick estimate replace filing?

No. The Cost of Asia residency checker is not a tax-due calculator. Confirm current local computation and filing instructions with an adviser.

Practical next step: Consult a qualified local professional before filing or claiming relief.
ILLUSTRATIVE CASE · NOT A LEGAL CONCLUSION

How the facts change the answer

On VND 40m of monthly *taxable* salary under the published band system, progressive slicing yields VND 0.5m on the first 10m, VND 2m on the next 20m and VND 2m on the next 10m: VND 4.5m before other adjustments. This is a band demonstration, NOT a tax estimate for VND 40m gross pay.

Do not infer a rate or tax due from this example. A second country can impose obligations, and tax credits or treaty eligibility require review.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying 20% to an entire VND 40m salary in this illustration
  • Forgetting taxable-income deductions
  • Applying resident brackets to nonresident cases
  • Assuming tax year 2025 and 2026 have identical brackets

Evidence to prepare before speaking with an adviser

A useful review starts with documents, not a generic promise of a zero-tax outcome.

  • Days physically in Vietnam in calendar year and first 12 months
  • Accommodation contracts and residence registration
  • Employment contract, payroll and location of work actually performed
  • Tax withholding certificates and prior annual PIT settlements
  • Other-country income tax returns and relevant treaty residence proof

If you have income in multiple countries, prepare a year-by-year breakdown and explain how you established the source of each category.
