Stays on arrival, by passport

What each passport gets at the border for a tourist visit, before any long-stay visa. "On arrival (paid)" means Indonesia's IDR 500,000 visa on arrival or e-VOA; "e-visa" means Vietnam's online visa, applied for before you fly.

Recent rule changes

What moved in 2026.

  1. Thailand cuts visa-free stays from 60 to 30 days. The exemption is now for tourism only. 60 nationalities keep it; 21 lost it, including Mexico, Morocco and Monaco. Land-border visa-free entries are capped at two per calendar year.
  2. Stricter DTV applications. You now apply from your country of citizenship or legal residence, with a criminal record certificate issued within six months.
  3. Indonesia widens visa-free entry to Brazil, Türkiye, Peru, Kazakhstan, Macau and Belarus. A VoA price rise (IDR 750,000 online, 1,000,000 at the airport) was announced in August without a start date.
  4. Malaysia pauses new DE Rantau applications. MDEC reopens the Nomad Pass on 1 December 2026 under an enhanced framework.
  5. Malaysia's 30-day visa-free entry for Chinese and Indian citizens is scheduled to end unless renewed. Check again if your trip runs into 2027.
  6. Vietnam's 45-day exemption for 22 European passports, Japan and South Korea runs to 14 March or 14 August 2028, depending on the group.

Educational screening, not immigration advice. Cost of Asia is a research publisher, not a licensed immigration adviser. Entry is always at the border officer's discretion, embassies apply their own document rules, and policies change with little notice. Confirm on the official portals linked above before you book, and get professional advice for long-stay applications.

This tool covers ordinary passports for tourism and long-stay residence. It does not cover employment visas, students, diplomats or transit. Health insurance rules by visa are in the health cover estimator; tax effects of a long stay are in the tax residency checker.
