Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Three of Bangkok's best-known international schools are at opposite ends of the metro area: ISB in Nichada Thani (Pak Kret, Nonthaburi), Bangkok Patana on Sukhumvit 105 in Bang Na, and Shrewsbury's Riverside campus on Charoen Krung. The best family area is usually the one that cuts your school run. Secure a school place first, then house-hunt nearby, and drive the route at school-run time before signing.

This guide is for parents moving to Bangkok with school-age children. The trade-off: central Sukhumvit puts you near offices, hospitals and the BTS, but space costs far more. Suburbs around the big campuses offer gardens but a longer commute for the working parent.

So we've organized the city around its schools; each area is matched to at least one school whose address we checked.

At a glance

Best for Pick Why
Walkable city life Asok–Phrom Phong–Thong Lo NIST, a large park and a children's hospital nearby
British curriculum on a budget Phra Khanong–On Nut Bangkok Prep's combined campus on Sukhumvit 77
Bangkok Patana families Bang Na–Srinakarin School on Sukhumvit 105, children's hospital on Srinakarin Road
Gated suburban life Nichada Thani Built around ISB, with 24-hour security and bike paths
River views and a calmer pace Charoen Krung riverside Shrewsbury's Riverside campus

How we chose

  • School access: at least one established international school within or next to the area.
  • Healthcare: a private hospital with pediatric services nearby.
  • Daily logistics: rail access, or a realistic case for living without a long drive.
  • Space versus price: how far your housing budget stretches, based on Numbeo's rent data.

1. Asok–Phrom Phong–Thong Lo — best for walkable city life

NIST International School is on Sukhumvit Soi 15, a short walk from Asok BTS and Sukhumvit MRT. Benjakitti Park is nearby: 72 hectares of green space next to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, fully open since 2022. Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital, on Soi 49, has a children's hospital on the same campus.

The catch is cost. Numbeo puts a city-center three-bedroom at about ฿75,700 a month, against about ฿28,000 outside the center.

2. Phra Khanong–On Nut — best for British curriculum on a budget

Bangkok Prep follows the National Curriculum of England from Nursery to A-levels. Its secondary campus opened on Sukhumvit Soi 77 (On Nut) in 2017, and the primary school moved there from Thong Lo in 2023. Families with children in both phases now have a single drop-off point.

Further from the center, the same budget usually buys more space, and you're still on the BTS Sukhumvit Line for a parent working in Asok.

3. Bang Na–Srinakarin — best for Bangkok Patana families

Bangkok Patana School is at 643 La Salle Road (Sukhumvit 105). It teaches roughly 2,250 students from about 18 months to 18 years: the English National Curriculum through IGCSE, then the IB Diploma. Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, at 488 Srinakarin Road, also runs a children's hospital.

If a garden matters, ask agents about houses in gated estates near the school, not just condos. The trade-off is the commute to central Bangkok; test it at peak hour.

BUILD YOUR PLAN

What would this move really cost you?

Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.

4. Nichada Thani — best for gated suburban life

The International School Bangkok has been on its Nichada Thani campus in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, since moving from Sukhumvit Soi 15 in 1992. It is an American-style PK–12 school and was the first in Thailand to offer the IB Diploma. ISB describes the community as having 24-hour security, bike paths, a lake and very little traffic: for younger children, the closest thing to a self-contained school village.

The downside is distance from central offices. The MRT Pink Line has run its full route since January 2024, with stations in the Pak Kret area. It connects to the BTS Sukhumvit Line at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat and to the Purple Line at Nonthaburi Civic Center. Check how far your soi is from the nearest station.

5. Charoen Krung riverside — best for river views and a calmer pace

Shrewsbury International School's Riverside campus is at 1922 Charoen Krung Road, in Bang Kho Laem. Living along this stretch of the Chao Phraya keeps the school run short. Ask how your building handles school-bus pickup.

Shrewsbury also runs a City Campus, opened in 2018, on Rim Klong Samsen Road in Huai Khwang. Confirm which campus your child's year group attends before choosing an area.

What to check before you decide

  • Confirm the school place in writing first, including the campus and the year group.
  • Drive the school run at 7 a.m. on a weekday, not on a Sunday viewing.
  • Ask whether the school bus serves your building, and what it costs per term.
  • Check flood history for the soi and the parking level with the building's juristic office.
  • Plan for the haze season. Bangkok's PM2.5 is usually worst from January to March, so budget for air purifiers in the bedrooms.
  • Price the whole package in our budget calculator, not just the rent.

FAQ

Which Bangkok area is best for families with young children?

It depends on the school. If you haven't picked one, central Sukhumvit around Asok and Phrom Phong keeps you near NIST, a children's hospital and a large park. If you want a garden, look at Bang Na or Nichada Thani instead.

Is Bangkok's air quality a problem for children?

Seasonally, yes. Fine particulate pollution usually peaks from January to March. Check Air4Thai or IQAir before outdoor activities, and ask schools how they handle high-pollution days.

Do families in Bangkok need a car?

Not in central Sukhumvit, where rail, taxis and school buses cover most needs. In Bang Na or Nichada Thani, a car or regular driver makes life much easier.
