Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Hanoi's leading international schools are spread around the city, not grouped in one expat area: UNIS is in Ciputra (Tay Ho), BIS Hanoi and the French lycée are east of the Red River in Long Bien, and Concordia is north in Dong Anh. A school run across the river or out to Dong Anh can take up much of your child's day. Shortlist schools first, then rent within a short drive of the one you choose.

Hanoi has fewer established international schools than Ho Chi Minh City, but it covers the main curricula: IB, British, American and French. Fees at the top end now pass VND 1 billion a year in the final grades.

This page is for relocating families who want a short list with clear criteria. Vietnam changed many official district and ward names in its 2025 administrative reform. We use the names schools and landlords still use, such as Tay Ho, Long Bien and Ba Dinh.

1. United Nations International School of Hanoi — best for IB in Tay Ho

UNIS sits in the Ciputra compound in Tay Ho, the area many expat families already target. It teaches the full IB from early years to the Diploma. An independent guide describes it as the city's oldest international school and as not-for-profit, governed by a board.

The International Schools Database lists 2026/27 fees from about VND 452 million (age 3) to about VND 1.03 billion (Grades 11 and 12). New students also pay an application fee (about VND 15.5 million) and an enrollment fee (about VND 45.3 million).

2. British International School Hanoi — best for a British curriculum

BIS Hanoi, part of the Nord Anglia group, teaches the British curriculum from Foundation to Year 13 and ends with the IB Diploma. An independent guide reports CIS and WASC accreditation and places the campus at Vinhomes Riverside in Long Bien. The International Schools Database lists 2026/27 fees from about VND 343 million to VND 970 million a year.

3. Hanoi International School — best for a central IB option

HIS is an IB World School offering the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programs, and it is located in Ba Dinh, close to the embassy district. That central position suits families who live in the Old Quarter, Ba Dinh or the western side of Tay Ho. The International Schools Database lists 2026/27 fees from about VND 440 million to VND 797 million.

Concordia runs an American curriculum from preschool to Grade 12, with AP courses in the upper grades, and it is WASC accredited according to an independent guide. Its campus is in a golf resort in Dong Anh, north of the city. The International Schools Database shows its fees as not public, so request the current schedule.

5. Lycée Français Alexandre Yersin — best for French families

The lycée was founded in 1982 and is run directly by the AEFE, the French government agency for schools abroad. It teaches children aged 3 to 18 through to the Baccalauréat, has more than 1,100 students, and its main campus is at 44 Gia Thuong in Long Bien. The International Schools Database lists 2026/27 fees of about VND 150 million to 207 million, far below the English-language schools.

What to check before you decide

  • The commute. If your home and school are on opposite sides of the Red River, test the rush-hour school run before signing a lease.
  • All-in cost. Ask for application, enrollment, development, bus and meal fees on top of tuition.
  • Air quality policy. Ask about classroom filtration and the air-quality level at which outdoor play moves inside.
  • Fees by nationality. French-network schools often charge different rates depending on nationality, so ask which rate applies to you.
  • Waitlists for the grade and start date you need.
