Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Maternity cover on the international plans we checked starts only after a 12-month wait: Allianz Care sets 12 months on its Care Enhanced and Signature tiers, and Cigna's product summary gives 12 months for policies outside Hong Kong and Singapore. If a baby is part of your plan in the next two years, buy the policy before you start trying, not once you are pregnant. Newborn cover can also depend on how long a parent has been insured, so ask for that rule too.

Commercial transparency: Cost of Asia has no contracted partner in this category. Providers are compared on published criteria, and no provider has paid for inclusion. If this changes, affiliate links will be labelled.

Insuring a family abroad is mostly about timing and paperwork: when maternity cover kicks in, how a newborn gets added, and whether each child needs a separate policy. Each family member is usually priced individually, so a family of four pays four premiums.

This page is for parents moving to Thailand or elsewhere in the region. The trade-off is that international plans handle pregnancy and travel better, while local plans can be cheaper for children once you are settled.

1. Allianz Care — best for a planned pregnancy plus family extras

Allianz Care's Care Enhanced and Care Signature include routine maternity and complications of pregnancy and childbirth, after a 12-month waiting period; Care Base does not. With the optional outpatient plan, Allianz lists family benefits such as breastfeeding consultations, post-natal counseling, and speech and language therapy for children. Each dependant is priced on their own age and country of residence.

Allianz launched this range mainly for the EU and UK in November 2025, with Asia-Pacific plans to follow, so check what is sold where you live.

2. Cigna Global — best for customizable family cover

On Cigna Global, maternity and newborn benefits sit only on Gold and Platinum. Cigna's February 2025 summary lists newborn care limits of US$75,000 on Gold and US$156,000 on Platinum for up to 90 days, and ties newborn cover to a parent having been continuously insured before the birth. You can add outpatient, dental and evacuation modules for each family member.

3. Pacific Cross — best for families settled in Thailand

For families living in Thailand at least six months a year, Pacific Cross is a local option with direct billing. Broker Pacific Prime's July 2025 summary lists caesarean section limits of 60,000 baht on Premier Plus, 120,000 on Maxima Plus and 200,000 on Ultima Plus, with optional dental and vision at 80% reimbursement. Ask for the maternity waiting period and newborn rules in the policy wording.

4. Luma Hi 5 — best for insuring children from birth in Thailand

Pacific Prime reports that Luma's Hi 5 plan accepts applicants from newborn up to 70, with a 5 million baht annual limit and renewal to 99. A 2024 sponsored article on Khaosod English says maternity, dental and vision add-ons are available on some Luma plans. Luma is a broker, so ask which insurer underwrites the plan.

5. Allianz Ayudhya — best for budget cover for older children

Allianz Ayudhya's Superior Health accepts applicants from 15 days old on its higher tiers, and children under 11 must apply together with a parent. If your family needs cover for a Thai visa, Allianz Ayudhya notes that each dependant needs an individual policy.

What to check before you decide

  • Maternity waiting period and whether complications are covered from day one
  • How and when a newborn is added, and whether underwriting applies
  • Whether each child needs a separate policy for visa purposes
  • Outpatient limits, since children's claims are mostly outpatient visits
  • Residency rules if you plan to move countries

FAQ

Can I get maternity cover if I'm already pregnant?

On the plans we checked, maternity has a 12-month waiting period, so a current pregnancy will generally not be covered.

Do children need their own policy?

Usually each child is listed and priced separately. For Thai LTR visa dependants, Allianz Ayudhya says each one needs an individual policy with at least US$50,000 of cover, or a US$25,000 deposit; the BOI's dependants checklist lists the same deposit figure. Confirm on the BOI site before applying, as checklists are updated.
