Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team In Bangkok, a single child's international primary tuition (Numbeo average: ฿1,028,297 a year) is almost exactly what Numbeo estimates a family of four spends on everything else except rent (฿85,538 a month, about ฿1.03 million a year). With two children in school, fees can double your living budget before you've signed a lease. Ask shortlisted schools for their full fee schedule, including one-time enrollment charges, and compare cities on rent plus tuition, not rent alone.

This guide is for parents planning a move of a year or more with school-age children to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam or Bali, the four countries Cost of Asia covers. It ranks six cities on what decides a family move in practice: school options and fees, everyday costs, hospital access, air quality and whether the whole family can hold a visa.

The main trade-off: Vietnam's cities have the lowest everyday costs in Numbeo's data, but tuition there is high relative to those costs, and there's no visa route for families who are simply relocating. Malaysia and Thailand have clearer dependent rules and deep school markets, at a higher price.

Big-city Vietnam on a lower base budget Ho Chi Minh City Family costs about USD 1,729 a month before rent
Beach life with city services Da Nang Family costs about USD 1,635 a month before rent
Outdoor-oriented schooling Bali (Sanur, Canggu) Wide fee range; tuition about 45% of everyday costs

Numbeo's tuition figure is an average of user reports; individual schools range widely above and below it.

1. Kuala Lumpur — best overall balance

Who it suits

Families who want a big, English-friendly city where school fees don't swamp the budget. On Numbeo, average international primary tuition (RM74,299 a year) is about 70% of a year's non-rent family spending, the lowest share among the big cities here. Malaysia also had the lowest 2025 PM2.5 average of the four countries in IQAir's data (16.0 µg/m³). IHH lists Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur as JCI-accredited.

Trade-offs

Visa routes cost money. DE Rantau dependents can include a spouse, children under 18 and the holder's parents, at RM540 per dependent, but the main applicant needs USD 24,000 (tech) or USD 60,000 (non-tech) a year. MM2H covers children under 21, but the Silver tier asks for a USD 150,000 deposit and a home of at least RM600,000.

Check before you commit

Shortlist schools first, then look for a home on the same side of the city. Our Kuala Lumpur schools guide goes into individual schools.

2. Penang — best smaller city with established schools

Who it suits

Families who want a calmer island base. The International School of Penang (Uplands) in Batu Ferringhi teaches the IB Primary and Middle Years programmes, IGCSE and the IB Diploma for ages 4 to 18. Dalat International School in Tanjung Bungah offers an American college-preparatory curriculum with an explicitly Christian outlook, from P3 to Grade 12. IHH lists Gleneagles Hospital Penang as JCI-accredited.

Trade-offs

Numbeo's George Town tuition average (RM20,100 a year) is far below KL's, but it rests on only 11 contributors, so ask schools directly. A city-center three-bedroom averages RM3,750, about 21% below KL. The school market is smaller than KL's, so waitlists matter more.

Check before you commit

Both schools sit on the north coast; living there keeps the school run short.

3. Bangkok — best for school choice

Who it suits

Families who want the widest choice of curricula. Options include Bangkok Patana School in Bangna (IB, CIS-accredited, not-for-profit), International School Bangkok in Nichada Thani, Nonthaburi (American-style, ages 3 to 18, WASC-accredited, the first IB Diploma school in Thailand), NIST International School on Sukhumvit Soi 15 near Asok BTS and Sukhumvit MRT, and Shrewsbury International School (English National Curriculum, ages 3 to 18) with Riverside and City campuses. Bumrungrad, Asia's first JCI-accredited hospital, is on Sukhumvit Soi 3.

Trade-offs

It's the costliest city in this guide: Numbeo puts a family of four at about USD 2,548 a month before rent, and a city-center three-bedroom at ฿75,667. Tuition alone matches the rest of that budget. Cross-town school runs can eat hours.

Check before you commit

Thailand's DTV lists the spouse and children of DTV holders as dependents, and the main applicant needs 500,000 baht in funds. Since 15 September 2026, the visa-free stay is 30 days for tourism only (TTG Asia), so plan a scouting trip carefully.

4. Ho Chi Minh City — best for big-city Vietnam on a lower base budget

Who it suits

Families with a parent employed locally, or with an employer handling paperwork. Numbeo's family-of-four estimate is about USD 1,729 a month before rent, and a city-center three-bedroom averages ₫33.9 million. Many international families live in the area still called District 2 / Thao Dien. (Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform renamed or merged many districts and wards, so official addresses may differ from names people use.)

Trade-offs

Tuition is high relative to living costs: one child's average fee is about 127% of a year's non-rent spending. Vietnam has no remote-work or family relocation visa; WhereNext notes temporary residence cards come only through eligible routes such as work, investment or family ties to a Vietnamese citizen. Vietnam's 2025 national PM2.5 average (29.7 µg/m³) is high. For hospitals, WhereNext names FV Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City as one private option.

Check before you commit

Confirm which visa and residence card each family member will hold before accepting a job, and ask schools about indoor air filtration.

Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.

5. Da Nang — best for beach life with city services

Who it suits

Families who want the sea within reach and a lower everyday budget: about USD 1,635 a month before rent for a family of four on Numbeo.

Trade-offs

Tuition is about 123% of a year's non-rent spending, and the narrow Numbeo range (₫554 million to ₫689 million) suggests fewer reported options than in the big cities. The same visa limits as Ho Chi Minh City apply.

Check before you commit

Visit schools in person and ask about class sizes, curriculum continuity to age 18 and teacher turnover.

6. Bali (Sanur and Canggu) — best for outdoor-oriented schooling

Who it suits

Families drawn to outdoor life and alternative education. Honeycombers' October 2025 guide lists Green School Bali near Ubud (its own curriculum, WASC-accredited, from IDR 177.8 million a year), Bali Island School in Sanur (IB PYP, MYP and Diploma, from IDR 65 million) and Canggu Community School (English curriculum, IGCSE and IB Diploma, from IDR 110 million). Numbeo's average tuition is about 45% of a year's non-rent family costs. Bali International Hospital opened in Sanur in 2025, and BIMC runs hospitals in Kuta and Nusa Dua.

Trade-offs

The E33G remote worker visa requires USD 60,000 a year in foreign income; confirm how dependents are added with your sponsor. Indonesia's 2025 national PM2.5 average (30.0 µg/m³) is high, though Bali's own readings may differ.

Also considered: Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai has real school options. Prem Tinsulanonda International School in Mae Rim, north of the city, is a day and boarding school offering all four IB programmes for ages 3 to 19, and Lanna International School in the Hang Dong area follows England's National Curriculum for ages 2 to 18. It also has the lowest rent index among the Southeast Asian cities in Numbeo's regional ranking.

We left it off the main list because of the annual smoke season. IQAir measured an AQI above 150 in April 2026, and Thailand Starter Kit describes the worst months as roughly February to April. Prem says it runs a positive-pressure system and air purifiers to keep classrooms supplied with filtered air, which is exactly the kind of answer to ask any school for. If your family can travel during March, Chiang Mai deserves a look; see our Chiang Mai schools guide.

What to check before you decide

  • The full fee schedule: tuition, enrollment and building fees, buses, uniforms.
  • Waitlists for your children's year groups.
  • Visa status for every family member, and how long it lasts.
  • Pediatric care and direct billing at the nearest hospital.
  • Air quality policies: indoor filtration and outdoor-play rules at school.
  • The school run at 7 a.m., not at noon.
