Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team If you shortlist Penang hospitals by JCI accreditation alone, you drop Island Hospital, which the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council named the country's first Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital in December 2025. Island Hospital is accredited by Australia's ACHSI and Malaysia's MSQH instead of JCI. Treat any of these three badges as a sign of external auditing, then compare the specific department you need.
Penang packs several large private hospitals into a few kilometers of George Town, which is why the island draws medical travelers from across the region.
This page is for residents, retirees and medical tourists. The main trade-off is location versus specialty: the George Town hospitals sit close together, while people in Bayan Lepas or on the mainland may be better served nearer home.

How we chose
- External accreditation: JCI, ACHSI or MSQH, as stated by the hospital or its parent group.
- Breadth of services: bed count, specialist numbers and 24-hour emergency care.
- Location: travel time from the areas where expats live.
- International patient support: a dedicated desk for estimates and coordination.
We used each hospital's own website, IHH Healthcare's accreditation list and press coverage. We have no commercial relationship with any hospital. Checked on 31 October 2026.
1. Gleneagles Hospital Penang — best for JCI-accredited care in George Town
Gleneagles sits at 1 Jalan Pangkor, a short drive from Gurney Drive, Pulau Tikus and Tanjung Tokong. The hospital says it gained JCI accreditation in 2016, and its parent group, IHH Healthcare, lists it as accredited by both JCI and MSQH. Gleneagles reports more than 85 doctors. It suits expats on the northern coast who want international accreditation without crossing town.
2. Island Hospital — best for medical tourists
Island Hospital, at 308 Macalister Road, is the largest private hospital on this list at 600 beds. It reports more than 90 full-time specialists. It holds hospital-wide accreditation from ACHSI and MSQH, plus ACHSI recognition for cancer care, cardiology and gastroenterology.
In December 2025, the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) named it Malaysia's first Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital. The hospital says it has treated about 700,000 international patients since 2022. Its international patient services team handles coordination before arrival and can arrange second opinions for people still overseas.
3. Penang Adventist Hospital — best for the longest JCI track record
Penang Adventist Hospital traces its roots to a clinic opened in 1924 and has operated on Burmah Road since the early 1930s. In 2007 it became the first hospital in Malaysia to receive JCI accreditation, and it also holds MSQH accreditation. It has 251 beds, including intensive care and neonatal intensive care units.
4. Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre — best for a central option near Macalister Road
Founded in 1975, Loh Guan Lye is spread across Jalan Macalister and Jalan Logan in the heart of George Town, with 276 beds. The centre states it holds a full four-year MSQH accreditation. Departments include cardiology, neurology, oncology and spine surgery. It is close to Island Hospital and Penang Adventist, so compare all three for your specialty.
What would this move really cost you?
Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.
5. Pantai Hospital Penang — best for the south of the island
Pantai Hospital Penang is at 82 Jalan Tengah, Bayan Baru, near the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone and Penang International Airport. The hospital reports 209 licensed beds and 26 specialties, including cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery. IHH lists it as MSQH-accredited.
If you live in Bayan Lepas, Batu Maung or Sungai Ara, it saves you the drive into George Town during rush hour, which the hospital itself puts at about 30 minutes.
6. Sunway Medical Centre Penang — best for mainland residents
Sunway Medical Centre Penang opened in Seberang Jaya on 17 July 2023 with 200 beds in its first phase. It offers radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, a cancer center and Da Vinci Xi robotic surgery, plus 24-hour emergency care. For anyone living in Butterworth or Bukit Mertajam, it avoids a bridge crossing in an emergency.
What to check before you decide
- Accreditation status today: ask the hospital for the current certificate and expiry date. Accreditation is renewed periodically.
- The specialist, not just the building: look up your doctor on the Malaysian Medical Council's register (merits.mmc.gov.my).
- Direct billing: call your insurer to confirm the hospital is in its direct-settlement network, and ask whether you need a guarantee letter before admission.
- An itemized written estimate: ask for a breakdown separating the specialist's professional fees from hospital charges (room, drugs, consumables). Specialist fees in private hospitals follow the government fee schedule under Act 586 (Schedule 13).
- Emergency route: time the drive from your home at peak hour.
FAQ
Which hospital in Penang is JCI accredited?
As of our check, Gleneagles Hospital Penang and Penang Adventist Hospital state they hold JCI accreditation. Island Hospital holds ACHSI and MSQH instead.
Will I see medicine prices before I pay?
Not necessarily. A government order requiring private facilities to display medicine prices took effect on 1 May 2025, but on 21 May 2026 the High Court stayed its enforcement for private healthcare facilities pending a judicial review. Ask for prices in writing.
Is Penang good for medical tourism?
Several hospitals run international patient desks. Get a written estimate and confirm the treating specialist before booking flights.
