Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team In Indonesia, mobile data is now faster than home broadband: Ookla's August 2026 index put the median mobile download at 66.34 Mbps versus 51.40 Mbps for fixed lines, which ranked 113th in the world. A villa's "fast Wi-Fi" claim tells you little. Ask the landlord for an evening speed test, keep a local SIM with a generous data plan as your backup, and live within a short ride of a coworking space that opens late.

Bali draws a large remote-work crowd, but the island's work hubs are spread across separate towns with slow roads between them. Your choice of area decides whether your coworking desk is a five-minute ride or a daily traffic battle.

This page is for remote workers planning to stay at least a month. The trade-off is community versus calm: Canggu has the most coworking and social life, while Ubud, Uluwatu and Sanur are quieter and, in Ubud's case, cheaper at the entry level.

At a glance

Best for Pick Why
Community and coworking choice Canggu (Berawa, Batu Bolong) Most coworking spaces in one area; heavy traffic
Focus and value Ubud 24-hour Outpost; lowest entry villa rents in our source
Surf-and-work routine Uluwatu & Ungasan Coworking on the Bukit; spread out
City comforts between hubs Seminyak & Umalas Restaurants, gyms; 30–45 minutes to Canggu
Quiet and healthcare Sanur Calm pace, new international hospital; few coworking options

How we chose

  • Coworking spaces confirmed in a January 2026 roundup by Bali Home Immo.
  • Published rents from Bali Villa Realty (September 2026, furnished, USD).
  • Peak-hour drive times from Bali Holiday Secrets (updated July–August 2026).
  • National internet data from Ookla's Speedtest Global Index, via Bisnis.com and Databoks.

Checked on 31 October 2026.

1. Canggu — best for community and coworking choice

Canggu has the densest cluster of workspaces on the island. Bali Home Immo's 2026 list includes BWork on Jalan Nelayan, which runs near round-the-clock hours; Tropical Nomad on Jalan Subak Canggu; SOKKOOL, a coliving and coworking space in Tibubeneng; and ZIN@Work, a free café workspace.

The cost is time and money. Badung's transport head told The Nightly in June 2026 that Canggu's roads are equally narrow and equally jammed, and a 5 km trip can top an hour in peak season. Bali Villa Realty lists furnished one-bedroom apartments at $450–1,000 a month. Pick a place you can walk or ride to your desk from in minutes.

2. Ubud — best for focus and value

Outpost in Penestanan opens 24 hours, every day, which helps if you work European or American hours. Ubud Co-Working sits in Petulu. Bali Villa Realty's table has Ubud's one-bedroom villas starting at $483 a month and apartments at $398–796, the lowest entry points it lists.

You give up the beach and easy airport runs (1.5–2.5 hours). Canggu is about 1.5 hours away, so Ubud works best if you won't be crossing the island every week.

3. Uluwatu & Ungasan — best for a surf-and-work routine

Monday Coworking on Jalan Toya Ning II in Ungasan gives the Bukit a dedicated workspace. One-bedroom apartments run $426–1,300 a month, per Bali Villa Realty.

Distances are long, so you'll need your own scooter. Evening traffic near Pecatu prompted permanent turn restrictions in July 2026, including a 5–10 pm limit at the Jalan Raya Uluwatu/Toya Ning II junction, on the same street as Monday Coworking (Go Asia). Check your route home at that hour.

BUILD YOUR PLAN

What would this move really cost you?

Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.

4. Seminyak & Umalas — best for city comforts between hubs

Seminyak and neighboring Umalas offer restaurants, gyms and shops, and Canggu's coworking is 30–45 minutes away. Rents are among Bali's highest: one-bedroom villas cost $1,024–1,900 a month in Seminyak and $853–1,900 in Umalas.

Our 2026 source lists no coworking spaces in Seminyak itself, so plan on a home office or a café. Kerobokan and Sunset Road slow trips toward Canggu.

5. Sanur — best for quiet and healthcare

Sanur suits nomads who want a calm routine and good medical access. Bali International Hospital opened there in 2025, and the airport is 45–75 minutes away. The trade-off: the January 2026 roundup listed no coworking spaces in Sanur, and the social scene is smaller. Bali Villa Realty doesn't publish Sanur rents, so compare several listings.

What to check before you decide

  • Evening internet speed at the property, plus a mobile backup.
  • Distance to your workspace in minutes at 4–7 pm, not kilometers.
  • Coworking hours and pricing, confirmed directly; our source didn't list prices.
  • What rent includes: electricity and internet are often extra.
  • Your visa: confirm your status allows remote work for foreign clients before you arrive.

FAQ

Is Canggu or Ubud better for digital nomads?

Canggu if you want community and many coworking options; Ubud if you want lower entry rents and quieter, focused days.

How fast is the internet in Bali?

There is no reliable Bali-only figure. Nationally, Ookla's August 2026 medians were 51.40 Mbps fixed and 66.34 Mbps mobile, and no Bali city made Databoks' H1 2026 top-10 list for fixed speeds. Test each property yourself.

Do I need a scooter to work remotely in Bali?

Usually. Without one, choose a home within walking distance of your coworking space.
