Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team In Bali, your first big transfer is often a full year of rent: HeyBali reports that yearly leases on private houses and villas are usually paid in full at signing, and that this is standard practice in Canggu, Berawa and Uluwatu. That turns a routine money question into a large one-off payment with a deadline. Test your route with a small transfer a few weeks before signing, and confirm the provider's per-transfer limit and the landlord's account details in writing.

Commercial transparency: Cost of Asia has no contracted partner in this category. Providers are compared on published criteria, and no provider has paid for inclusion. If this changes, affiliate links will be labelled.

This page is for people moving to or living in Bali who need rupiah for rent, deposits and daily costs. Most will make two kinds of transfer: a large one when they sign a lease, and smaller ones every month.

The cost that matters is the exchange margin. Wise's converter showed a mid-market rate of about 24,210 IDR per British pound on 31 October 2026. At that rate, £10,000 is about 242 million IDR, so every 1% of margin a provider takes costs you about 2.4 million IDR. Compare the rupiah amount that will arrive, not the fee.

At a glance

Best for Pick Why
Regular monthly transfers Wise Mid-market rate plus a visible fee; licensed by Bank Indonesia
A year's rent in one payment Your home bank's wire, priced against Wise Single documented transfer for a large sum
Paying before you have a local account International transfer to the landlord's account Avoids waiting for your own account
Day-to-day cash A low-fee debit card Fine for small sums, costly for rent

How we chose

  • Total cost: exchange margin plus fees, measured against the mid-market rate.
  • Limits: whether a route can handle a full-year rent payment.
  • Licensing: whether the provider is authorized in Indonesia.
  • Paper trail: whether you get a clear record of who was paid and how much.

1. Wise — best for regular monthly transfers

Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a separate fee. Its Indonesian entity, PT Wise Payments Indonesia, is licensed by Bank Indonesia as a remittance service provider, according to Wise's regulatory page.

As a cost guide, Wise's Malaysia site shows a 30,000 MYR transfer to rupiah costing 201.12 MYR in total when paid from a Wise balance, or about 0.7%. Costs differ by currency route and amount, so check your own quote.

Before a large rent payment, look up Wise's current per-transfer limit for rupiah. Make sure the recipient's name matches the bank account exactly.

2. Your home bank's wire — best for a year's rent in one payment

A SWIFT wire from your home bank gives you a single, bank-to-bank record of a large payment, which is useful if a landlord or agent later disputes what was paid. The trade-off is usually a wider exchange margin and possible intermediary fees.

Ask your bank for its exact rupiah rate on your amount, then compare it with a same-day Wise quote. On a full year's rent, a difference of 1% to 2% adds up to millions of rupiah.

3. International transfer to the landlord's account — best before you have a local account

Many newcomers pay their first lease before opening an Indonesian bank account. You can send rupiah straight to the landlord's or agency's account using either route above.

HeyBali advises that the contract states the currency, rupiah or US dollars. If the contract is priced in dollars, agree in writing which rate and which date apply if you pay in rupiah. Pay only to an account named in the signed contract, and keep the transfer confirmation with the lease.

BUILD YOUR PLAN

What would this move really cost you?

Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.

4. A low-fee debit card — best for day-to-day cash

For groceries, scooter rental and small bills, withdrawing rupiah with a debit card can be simpler than a transfer. Check your card's foreign transaction fee, any ATM operator fee, and whether you are offered conversion into your home currency at the machine. Decline it and pay in rupiah.

Cards suit small, frequent amounts. They are an expensive way to pay a year's rent.

What to check before you decide

  • Run a test transfer a few weeks before signing a lease.
  • Confirm per-transfer limits with your provider for the full rent amount.
  • Match names exactly between the contract, the bank account and the transfer.
  • Fix the currency and exchange date in the lease if rent is quoted in dollars.
  • Budget for the deposit, which HeyBali says is usually one or two months' rent.
  • Ask your Indonesian bank which stay permit it requires before you plan to receive money in your own name.

FAQ

What is the cheapest way to send money to Indonesia?

Usually a specialist provider that uses the mid-market rate and shows its fee upfront, paid from your bank account. Compare the rupiah amount received on the same day.

Do I really have to pay a year's rent upfront in Bali?

For yearly leases on private villas and houses, HeyBali reports that full payment at signing is the norm. Monthly rentals avoid this but can cost two to three times the prorated yearly price.

Should I pay rent in rupiah or dollars?

Use whatever currency the contract states. If it is priced in dollars and you pay in rupiah, agree the exchange rate and date in writing.
