Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Indonesia's five-year E33E "Silver Hair" retirement permit needs no local sponsor, unlike the one-year E33F, but it requires a US$50,000 deposit in a state-owned Indonesian bank within 90 days of arrival. If you have the capital, it removes the yearly dependence on a sponsor; if not, budget for annual sponsored renewals. Emerhub notes the age floor is now 55 in the e-visa system, but one listing still says 60, so confirm on the official portal before you file.
For retirees, the deciding factors in Bali differ from a nomad's: how far you are from a good hospital, how long the airport run takes, and whether your street floods in the wet season.
The trade-off is that the most peaceful inland areas, like Ubud, are the furthest from the airport and from the newest hospitals in the south. This page compares four areas and the visa routes that let you stay.
At a glance
| Best for | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| All-round retirement | Sanur | Home to the new Bali International Hospital, under 75 min to the airport off-peak |

| Shortest airport run | Jimbaran | 15–30 min to the airport, close to BIMC Kuta |
| Culture and rice fields | Ubud | Arts and community life, local BIMC emergency care |

1. Sanur — best all-round for retirees
Sanur, in Denpasar on the east coast, has become Bali's healthcare hub. President Prabowo inaugurated the Sanur Special Economic Zone and Bali International Hospital there on 25 June 2025. The hospital focuses on cardiovascular, cancer, neurological and musculoskeletal care, and a November 2025 report said about 62% of its first 5,960 patients were foreigners.
The airport is typically 45 to 75 minutes away, more in the late afternoon. One caution: the September 2025 floods, Bali's worst in years, inundated much of Denpasar. Ask about a property's flood history before you sign.
2. Nusa Dua — best for resort-style calm
Nusa Dua is a resort area in Bali's far south. BIMC Nusa Dua, a full-service hospital, is inside the ITDC resort area, and the airport is usually 25 to 45 minutes away. It suits retirees who prefer a managed resort setting to village life.
The drawback is a tourist-oriented setting with less local community life. Access to Nusa Dua was cut during the September 2025 floods, so check how your route copes with heavy rain.
3. Jimbaran — best for the shortest airport run
Jimbaran sits just south of the airport, with typical drive times of 15 to 30 minutes. BIMC Hospital Kuta, which runs a 24-hour emergency and trauma center, is about seven minutes from the airport. For retirees who fly home often or want emergency care close by, that matters.
Between 3 and 7 pm, Bali Holiday Secrets advises adding at least 45 minutes to any South Bali drive, so time your appointments for the morning.
What would this move really cost you?
Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.
4. Ubud — best for culture and rice fields
Ubud offers arts, yoga, cooking and a strong sense of community. BIMC Ubud provides emergency care and a doctor on call for central Bali. A September 2026 rental guide from Bali Villa Realty lists one-bedroom villas in Ubud from about US$483 to US$1,400 a month.
The trade-off is distance. The airport run typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours, and getting to Sanur's hospital takes 45 to 55 minutes early in the morning but up to two hours in the late-afternoon rush. If you have a chronic condition, weigh this carefully.
Visa options for retirees
| Route | Validity | Key requirements (per Emerhub) |
|---|---|---|
| E33F Retirement KITAS | 1 year, renewable | Age 55+, US$3,000/month pension or income, US$2,000 bank balance over 3 months, sponsor required |
| E33E Silver Hair | 5 years | Same income test, no sponsor, US$50,000 deposit in a state bank |
| Second Home Visa | Up to 5 years | No age limit, US$130,000 state-bank deposit or US$1 million property under Hak Pakai title |
None of these routes allows you to work. Rules change, so check Indonesia's official e-visa portal and our Bali retirement visa guide before applying.
What to check before you decide
- Hospital access: Drive the route to your nearest hospital at 5 pm, not just midday.
- Flood history: Ask neighbors and the landlord how the property fared in September 2025.
- Rent terms: Yearly leases often require full payment upfront with no refund for early exit; get utilities, cleaning and maintenance terms in writing.
- Insurance: Check maximum entry ages and evacuation cover; see our Bali health insurance guide.
- Tax: Ask a qualified adviser whether a KITAS would make you an Indonesian tax resident and how your pension would be treated.
- Budget: Numbeo's Bali page (31 October 2026) puts a single person's monthly costs at about US$563 before rent; model yours in our budget calculator.
