Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team On Numbeo's South-Eastern Asia city index, Phuket scores higher than Bangkok on both cost of living (38.1 vs 37.1) and rent (20.5 vs 16.3), making it the most expensive city in the ranking. Moving to the beach doesn't automatically mean living cheaper; on a popular island, you often pay a premium for the view. If budget drives your move, compare Pattaya, Hua Hin or Da Nang before signing a Phuket lease.

This guide is for people who want to live by the sea for a year or more, not holiday there. We compare six beach towns in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Bali on cost, hospital access, air quality and how easy it is to stay legally.

The trade-off is services versus price. The towns with the best hospitals and flight links tend to cost more, while the cheapest seaside cities come with thinner visa options or longer trips for specialist care.

At a glance

Best for Pick Why
Full services on an island Phuket Bangkok Hospital Phuket; cleaner air than Chiang Mai
Value on the Thai coast Pattaya Lower Numbeo cost and rent indices than Phuket
A quiet Thai beach town Hua Hin Calm pace, Bangkok Hospital branch
Lowest everyday costs Da Nang About USD 453 a month before rent
Families Penang's north coast Uplands and Dalat schools nearby
A calm Bali beach Sanur Bali International Hospital opened in 2025

How we chose

  • Cost: Numbeo's regional city index and single-person estimates (excluding rent).
  • Healthcare: a confirmed private hospital in or near town.
  • Air: IQAir's 2025 data and Smart Air's 2025 Thai city averages.
  • Visa fit: a long-stay route available in that country.

Checked on 31 October 2026. Numbeo data for smaller towns rests on fewer contributors, so treat it as indicative.

1. Phuket — best for full services on an island

Phuket gives you an island lifestyle with big-town infrastructure, including Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Smart Air's analysis of 2025 data put Phuket's average PM2.5 at 11.1 µg/m³, against 17 for Chiang Mai.

The catch is price: it tops Numbeo's Southeast Asian cost and rent indices. Long-stayers typically use Thailand's DTV (500,000 baht in funds, up to 180 days per entry) or a retirement visa. See our Phuket guide.

2. Pattaya — best for value on the Thai coast

Pattaya scores 33.6 for cost of living and 12.6 for rent on Numbeo's regional index, well below Phuket. Its city page estimates about USD 590 a month for one person before rent, with a city-center one-bedroom averaging ฿20,493 (updated 28 October 2026). Bangkok Hospital Pattaya is in town.

It's a busy resort city with a strong nightlife reputation; choose your neighborhood carefully if you want quiet.

3. Hua Hin — best for a quiet Thai beach town

Hua Hin suits retirees and remote workers who want a calmer seafront. Numbeo estimates about USD 586 a month before rent, though from only 16 contributors and last updated on 3 January 2026. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is the main private hospital.

Ask which specialties are available locally and where complex cases are referred before you commit.

4. Da Nang — best for lowest everyday costs

Da Nang combines a long city beach with a real urban center. Numbeo puts single-person spending at about USD 453 a month before rent, and a city-center one-bedroom around ₫14.6 million (updated 28 October 2026). After Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform, which renamed or merged many districts and wards, Hoi An now falls within Da Nang.

The weak point is the visa: Vietnam has no retirement or remote-work visa, so most foreigners rely on the 90-day e-visa. See our Da Nang guide.

5. Penang's north coast — best for families

Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah, on Penang Island's north coast, put beaches near two established international schools: Uplands (IB and IGCSE, ages 4 to 18) and Dalat (American curriculum). Private hospitals, including JCI-accredited Gleneagles Penang and Island Hospital, are in George Town. Malaysia's 2025 PM2.5 average (16.0 µg/m³) was the lowest of the four countries.

Legal stays run through DE Rantau for remote workers or MM2H, which now requires a USD 150,000 deposit at the Silver tier. See our Penang guide.

6. Sanur, Bali — best for a calm Bali beach

Sanur, on Bali's east coast, is the quieter alternative to Canggu. Bali International Hospital opened in Sanur's special health economic zone in 2025, and Bali Island School teaches the IB from preschool to Year 12 there. Numbeo's Bali-wide estimate is about USD 563 a month before rent.

Visas are the hurdle: the E33G remote worker permit requires USD 60,000 a year in foreign income, and the E33F retirement permit has its own age and income rules.

What to check before you decide

  • Distance to a full-service hospital, and whether your insurer bills it directly.
  • Rainy and storm seasons for that specific coast.
  • Air quality by month, including seasonal haze.
  • Rental premiums for sea views versus a few streets inland.
  • A visa route you can renew from that country.
