Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team In five of the six cities we tested, Numbeo's estimate of a single person's everyday spending is larger than the rent on a one-bedroom outside the center. Bali is the exception. So whether $1,500 works depends more on how you live than on the apartment you pick, and Numbeo's estimate does not include health insurance or visa costs, which must come out of what is left.

This page is for solo remote workers, early retirees and career-breakers with about $1,500 a month to spend. We test the cities Cost of Asia covers against that budget using published data.

The trade-off: $1,500 covers a comfortable single life in most of these cities if you rent outside the center. Choose a central apartment in Bangkok or Bali, and the margin for insurance, visas and flights home nearly disappears.

At a glance

Best for Pick Scenario total (outside center)
Big city with the most headroom Ho Chi Minh City about $784
Central living within budget Penang about $812 ($939 central)
Beach city Da Nang about $816
Thailand on a budget Chiang Mai about $714 (index-based estimate)
Capital city Kuala Lumpur about $954
Tight but possible Bangkok about $1,049

How we chose

Our scenario: one adult, no car, no school fees.

  • Everyday costs: Numbeo's estimated monthly costs for a single person, excluding rent, as shown on each city page on 31 October 2026.
  • Rent: Numbeo's average rent for a one-bedroom apartment, outside and in the city center.
  • Currency: local prices converted at the exchange rate implied by Numbeo's own dollar and local-currency summary figures.
  • Not included: health insurance, visa fees, flights, and savings.

Checked on 31 October 2026.

City Everyday costs 1-bed outside center 1-bed center Left from $1,500 (outside / center)
Ho Chi Minh City $484 $300 $650 $716 / $366
Penang $522 $290 $417 $688 / $561
Da Nang $453 $363 $564 $684 / $483
Kuala Lumpur $594 $361 $692 $546 / $214

Bali $563 $573 $940 $365 / none (about $2 over)

1. Ho Chi Minh City — best big city with the most headroom

Numbeo puts everyday costs at about $484 and a one-bedroom outside the center at about ₫7.7 million (around $300), leaving roughly $716 for everything else. A central one-bedroom is more than double that (about ₫16.8 million), so the area you choose matters more here than anywhere else on this list. Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform renamed many districts and wards, so check addresses on listings carefully. See our Ho Chi Minh City cost of living page.

2. Penang — best for central living within budget

Penang is the only city where a central one-bedroom (about RM1,691, around $417) still leaves more than $500 of headroom. Everyday costs are about $522. Numbeo's Penang data rests on just 27 contributors, so confirm rents on local listings. See our Penang guide.

3. Da Nang — best beach city

Da Nang has the lowest everyday costs in our table (about $453), and a one-bedroom outside the center is about ₫9.4 million (around $363). Several commenters on Numbeo's page say prices have risen, so treat the rent as a floor. See our Da Nang monthly rent guide.

4. Chiang Mai — best for Thailand on a budget

Numbeo's Chiang Mai city page did not return current prices when we checked, so we used its 2026 mid-year indices instead. Chiang Mai's consumer prices are about 26% below Bangkok's and its rents about 45% lower. Applied to Bangkok's figures, that suggests about $521 for everyday costs and $193 for a one-bedroom outside the center. Treat this as an estimate and check current asking rents. Budget too for the smoke season (January to April, per IQAir): purifiers, or a few weeks away. See our Chiang Mai guide.

5. Kuala Lumpur — best capital city on $1,500

Everyday costs are about $594 and a one-bedroom outside the center about RM1,465 (around $361), leaving roughly $546. A central apartment cuts that to about $214, which is thin once insurance is added. See our Kuala Lumpur guide.

6. Bangkok — tight but possible

Bangkok has the highest everyday costs in our table (about $699). Outside the center (about ฿11,750, around $350) you keep roughly $451. A central one-bedroom (about ฿23,730) leaves under $100, which is not realistic once you add insurance. Remember that a DTV costs 10,000 baht per person, according to Thaiger's visa guide. See our Bangkok guide.

Why Bali is not on the list: a central one-bedroom alone (about Rp17 million) uses up the full budget alongside Numbeo's everyday estimate.

What to check before you decide

  • Get a written health insurance quote for your age, and subtract it from your headroom.
  • Add your visa costs spread over 12 months.
  • Check current asking rents in the exact neighborhood you want.
  • Budget for flights home and a small emergency fund.
  • Run your own numbers in our budget calculator.

FAQ

Is $1,500 a month enough to live in Southeast Asia?

For a single person renting outside the center, yes in every city we tested except where you choose central Bali or central Bangkok. Health insurance and visas still have to fit in the remainder.

Is $1,500 enough for a couple?

Numbeo's everyday estimate is per person. If you double it and share a one-bedroom outside the center, Ho Chi Minh City (about $1,269), Da Nang (about $1,268) and Penang (about $1,334) stay under $1,500 before insurance, while Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Bali go over. See our family cost of living guide for Vietnam.

Why are these totals lower than other websites quote?

Some sites include insurance, travel or a more expensive lifestyle. Our scenario shows only Numbeo's averages, so you can add your own extras on top.
