Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team A regional eSIM often costs two to three times more per gigabyte than a single-country plan from the same provider. Saily listed 10 GB for 30 days at $35.99 on its Asia and Oceania plan, against $10.99 for Thailand alone. If you'll spend most of your trip in one country, buy a local-country eSIM for that leg and keep a small regional plan for border days.
Commercial transparency: Cost of Asia has no contracted partner in this category. Providers are compared on published criteria, and no provider has paid for inclusion. If this changes, affiliate links will be labelled.
This page is for travelers moving between Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia who want one data plan instead of a SIM at every border. Settling in one country? Use the country guides below.
The trade-off is convenience against price. A regional eSIM works the moment you cross a border, but you pay for that. Most "unlimited" regional plans also slow down after a daily allowance.

How we chose
- Coverage of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia in a single plan.
- Published price, data allowance and validity.
- The real speed policy behind "unlimited" plans.
- Whether a local phone number is included (none of the regional plans below include one).

1. Airalo Asialink — best for flexible fixed-data bundles
Airalo's Asialink eSIM covers 18 countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines and Singapore. Validity starts on first connection in a covered country, so you can install it before you fly, and no identity check is needed.
According to eSIMDB's late-October listing, plans run from 1 GB for 3 days at $4 up to 100 GB for 180 days at $89, with 10 GB for 30 days at $25. The "Unlimited" versions give 3 GB a day, then drop to 1 Mbps. Like all plans on this page, Asialink is data-only.
2. Holafly Asia — best for unlimited data on short trips
Holafly's Asia eSIM covers 16 destinations, including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Singapore. You choose any duration from 1 to 90 days, with prices from $6.90 for one day up to $219.90 for 90 days on Holafly's Asia page.
Data is unlimited, but the same page caps hotspot sharing at 500 MB a day, a poor fit if you tether a laptop for work.
3. Saily Asia and Oceania — best for heavy daily users
Saily's regional plan covers 22 countries, including the main Southeast Asian destinations. eSIMDB lists 10 GB for 30 days at $35.99 and 25 GB for 60 days at $48.99. Its unlimited plans run from 5 to 30 days ($21.99 to $81.99) and give 5 GB a day at full speed.
That beats Airalo's 3 GB and Nomad's 2 GB, but Saily's single-country plans are far cheaper.
What would this move really cost you?
Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.
4. Nomad Regional APAC — best for small budgets
Nomad sells several regional plans. Its Regional APAC plan (14 countries) was listed at $9 for 3 GB over 30 days and $21 for 10 GB over 30 days, and its unlimited version gives 2 GB a day before slowing to 1 Mbps. eSIMDB doesn't list which 14 countries each plan includes, so check the coverage list on Nomad's site before you buy.
5. Single-country eSIMs — best for long stays in one country
If one country takes up most of your trip, the numbers favor a local-country plan. Airalo listed 10 GB for 30 days at $18 in Vietnam and $20 in Malaysia, versus $25 on Asialink. Saily's gap is wider: $10.99 for 10 GB in Thailand and $17.99 in Vietnam, against $35.99 regionally. Two single-country eSIMs can cost less than one regional plan.
What to check before you decide
- Phone compatibility: your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.
- Country list: regional plans differ. Confirm every country on your route, including transit stops.
- Daily caps: check what "unlimited" means (3 GB, 5 GB, or a fair-use policy) and the speed after it.
- Hotspot rules: Holafly caps sharing; check before relying on tethering.
- Local number needs: banks, ride-hailing and delivery apps may require a local number. Regional eSIMs don't provide one.
FAQ
Is one eSIM enough for Thailand, Vietnam, Bali and Malaysia?
Yes. Airalo Asialink, Holafly Asia and Saily Asia and Oceania all list these four countries. Check the provider's current country list before buying.
Do regional eSIMs include a phone number?
No. The plans compared here are data-only, so calls and messages go through apps such as WhatsApp. Keep your home SIM active if you need SMS codes.
Is a regional eSIM cheaper than local SIM cards?
Usually not per gigabyte. You pay for convenience at borders.
