Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Every private hospital on our list has an address in Mueang Phuket district, the Phuket Town area, while the west-coast beaches rely mainly on public Patong Hospital, which focuses on stabilizing and transferring emergency patients. If you live in Patong, Kata, Karon or Rawai, your "nearest hospital" for anything serious is likely across the island. Save the emergency line of a Phuket Town hospital and check the drive from your home before you sign a lease.
Phuket has at least two JCI-accredited private hospitals, a large public regional hospital and several smaller private options. For most expats, the choice comes down to three things: where you live on the island, whether your insurer bills the hospital directly, and how much you are willing to pay for faster, English-speaking service.
This page is for residents, retirees and families who want a shortlist they can act on. We don't rank hospitals on medical outcomes, because no public data lets anyone do that fairly. Each pick is labeled by the profile it suits best.

1. Bangkok Hospital Phuket — best for international patients
Bangkok Hospital Phuket is on Hongyokutis Road in Phuket Town and belongs to the BDMS network. Bangkok Hospital says it holds its own JCI accreditation. According to the Phuket 101 directory, it has an international patient center, interpreters for major languages, a 24-hour emergency department and medical evacuation, and it works with most travel insurers. It also runs a small clinic in Patong.
It suits expats with international insurance who want a coordinator to handle paperwork. Its local hotline is 1719, which only works from Thai numbers. Expect premium private pricing.
2. Bangkok Hospital Siriroj — best for emergencies and trauma
Many residents still call it Phuket International Hospital. Siriroj is at 44 Chalermprakiat Ror 9 Road (the bypass road, next to Big C) in Phuket Town. According to Window on Phuket, it has 196 inpatient beds and more than 30 specialties, including 24-hour emergency and trauma care, intensive care, pediatrics, obstetrics and IVF. It is JCI-accredited, and its medical transport team holds CAMTS accreditation.
The emergency and ambulance line is +66 76 210 935. It is a strong choice for families and for anyone who wants a second JCI-accredited option on the island.
3. Dibuk Hospital — best mid-size private option
Dibuk Hospital is a BDMS hospital at 89/8-9 Moo 2, Chaofa Road, in Mueang Phuket district. According to Phuket 101, it opened in 2014, has a 24-hour emergency service and employs international coordinators who speak more than ten languages.
Its JCI status is not stated in the sources we checked, so ask the hospital directly if accreditation matters to you or your insurer.
What would this move really cost you?
Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.
4. Mission Hospital Phuket — best for lower private prices
Mission Hospital is a non-profit Seventh-day Adventist hospital on Thep Krasattri Road, founded in 1940. In 2019, The Phuket News reported it was the only private hospital in Phuket rated "green" for medicine pricing in a national review. Phuket 101 says general practitioners are available around the clock, with specialists by appointment.
It suits retirees and long-stay residents paying out of pocket for routine care. Check specialist availability before a planned procedure.
5. Vachira Phuket Hospital — best for public care
Vachira Phuket is the island's large government hospital on Yaowarat Road, with 500+ beds, according to Phuket 101. It has an international department, though English can be limited. It treats patients first and bills afterward, while private hospitals usually ask for a deposit.
Expect longer waits. Foreigners don't pay Thai rates: under tiered pricing introduced in 2019, Non-Immigrant O visa holders are grouped with tourists in the highest price tier at government hospitals.
What to check before you decide
- Direct billing: ask your insurer which Phuket hospitals it bills directly for outpatient and inpatient care.
- Drive time: test the route from your home at peak hours, especially in high season.
- JCI scope: accreditation applies to a named hospital, not a whole brand. Check JCI's online directory.
- Emergency numbers: save 1669 (national medical emergency) plus your chosen hospital's direct line.
- Deposits: ask what deposit is required if your insurer's guarantee of payment is delayed.
FAQ
Which is the best hospital in Phuket for foreigners?

Is there a hospital in Patong?
Yes. Patong Hospital is a public hospital with a 24-hour emergency department focused on stabilization and transfer. English is limited and specialist clinics run on weekdays only. Bangkok Hospital Phuket also runs a clinic in Patong.
Will a Thai hospital treat me in an emergency without insurance?
The Thai government has reminded hospitals that they cannot refuse emergency patients, including foreign tourists. For foreigners, the hospital will claim costs from the patient's insurance or funds, so plan to pay.
