Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Most of southern Phuket drives through Chalong Circle twice a day, and from Rawai the morning run to BISP in Koh Kaew can take over an hour at school time. The Heroines Monument underpass on the main north–south road has also been shelved, so that bottleneck isn't going away. Pick the school first, then rent on its side of the island.

This guide is for parents who are choosing where to live in Phuket around school, healthcare and daily driving. The island is small on a map, but traffic and the monsoon make distances feel much longer, so the right area is usually the one closest to your children's school.

The main trade-off is between beach lifestyle and logistics. The west-coast resort areas look appealing, but most schools and the large hospitals are in the center and in Phuket Town.

How we chose

  • School run: at least one international school in the area, and drive times to others.
  • Hospital access: minutes to a private hospital with 24-hour emergency care.
  • Traffic and flooding: documented bottlenecks and flood-prone streets.
  • Rent: October 2026 twelve-month lease bands published by Phuket 101.

Checked on 31 October 2026.

1. Koh Kaew — best for BISP families

The British International School Phuket is on Thepkrasattri Road in Koh Kaew. It teaches ages 2 to 18, with IGCSE, A-Levels and the IB Diploma, and offers boarding. Phuket 101 lists 2026-27 tuition at ฿489,000 to ฿982,700 a year. Living here gives you the shortest BISP run on the island, with a hospital about 15 minutes away and the airport about 20.

The catch is the Heroines Monument junction, which jams at school time. Phuket 101 lists two-bedroom rents at ฿10,000 to ฿25,000 a month.

2. Phuket Town / Wichit — best for living without a car

Phuket 101 calls Phuket Town the only area where you can live comfortably without a car. HeadStart International School (British curriculum, ages 2 to 18) and Oak Meadow International School (American curriculum) are both in Wichit. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is 8–10 minutes away, with the public Vachira Phuket Hospital across the road. Bangkok Hospital Siriroj is on Chalermprakiat Ror 9 Road in Wichit. Both private hospitals run 24-hour emergency departments.

Rents are the lowest on this list: ฿8,000 to ฿15,000 for a one-bedroom condo, ฿15,000 to ฿28,000 for a townhouse, according to Phuket 101. The downside is flooding: Old Town streets and low ground along the Bang Yai canal flood in heavy rain.

3. Kathu — best for value and central access

Kajonkiet International School (British curriculum, ฿200,000 to ฿454,000 a year for 2026-27) and QSI International School of Phuket (American-style) are both in Kathu. BISP and HeadStart are 15–20 minutes away, and a hospital about 10. Phuket 101 lists condos and townhouses at ฿10,000 to ฿15,000 a month.

Before choosing a house, check its flood history. Phuket 101 reports flooding in October 2025 and dry-season water outages. The hill road to Patong is steep and congested.

BUILD YOUR PLAN

What would this move really cost you?

Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.

4. Bang Tao / Laguna — best for space near the beach

The northwest has gated estates and green space. HeadStart has a second campus in Cherng Talay, and UWC Thailand, an IB school with boarding in Thalang, is about 20 minutes away. BISP is 15–30 minutes away, depending on traffic.

This is the most expensive area. Phuket 101 lists three-bedroom pool villas at ฿60,000 to ฿150,000 a month, more inside Laguna. Hospitals are 25–40 minutes away, the Cherng Talay road jams in the December–February high season, and water was rationed here in drought years.

5. Chalong — best for southern villas

BCIS (Berda Claude International School, British curriculum with a French section) and Montessori House Phuket are in Chalong, and HeadStart is close by. Dibuk Hospital, a private hospital on Chao Fa West Road, has 24-hour emergency care. Phuket 101 lists three-bedroom pool villas at ฿38,000 to ฿70,000 a month, lower than in the northwest.

The trade-off is Chalong Circle, which jams at school time and at dusk and floods in a bad October. Further south, Rawai has Lighthouse International School, but the drive to northern campuses is long.

What to check before you decide

  • Secure the school place first, then search within 15–20 minutes of the campus.
  • Drive the school run at 7:30 a.m. on a weekday in term time.
  • Ask about flood history for the street. September and October are the riskiest months.
  • Ask about water supply in the dry season, especially on hillsides.
  • Budget beyond tuition. Phuket 101 says buses, uniforms, lunches and exams add roughly a sixth to a fifth.

FAQ

Which part of Phuket is best for families?

The center (Koh Kaew, Wichit and Kathu) gives the shortest school runs and the quickest hospital access. Bang Tao and Laguna suit families who want beach and space and can accept longer drives.

Is Phuket safe for families during rainy season?

Daily life continues, but low streets in Rawai, Chalong, Kathu and Phuket Town can flood in heavy rain, especially in September and October. Rent above street level and check drainage.

Do you need a car in Phuket with kids?

Almost everywhere, yes. Phuket Town is the main exception, and many schools run buses. Confirm the route for your street before signing.
