Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Bangkok Hospital's neighborhood clinics in Rawai and Kamala close at 8 p.m., and Phuket 101's directory lists no 24-hour hospital in Rawai, Kata or Kamala. A clinic down the road is handy for a dressing or a blood test, but not for chest pain at night. Before you sign a lease, find the nearest 24-hour emergency department and drive there at the hour you'd least want to.
This guide is for retirees choosing where to settle in Phuket. It compares five areas on how fast you can reach a 24-hour emergency department, whether you can manage without driving, rent, and monsoon risks.
The main trade-off is between community and convenience. Rawai and Nai Harn have the island's best-known retiree scene but the longest drives. Phuket Town and Chalong are closer to the hospitals, with less of a beach life.
At a glance

| Village beach life | Kamala | Calm beach, local clinic |
How we chose
- Emergency access: drive time to a hospital with a 24-hour emergency department.
- Daily life: walkability, community and shopping.
- Rent: October 2026 twelve-month lease bands published by Phuket 101 (publisher estimates, not official data).
- Risks: documented floods, water shortages and difficult roads.
Checked on 4 November 2026.
1. Rawai & Nai Harn — best for an established retiree community
Phuket 101 names settled retirees first among the people this area suits, with a long-term British, Australian, German and Scandinavian community. Nai Harn is calm and swimmable most of the year. Condos run 15,000–22,000 baht a month and villas 45,000–90,000 baht.
Bangkok Phuket Clinic Rawai, part of the Bangkok Hospital network, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for consultations, wound care and blood tests. For emergencies, Phuket 101 puts Bangkok Hospital Phuket 20–25 minutes away through the Chalong Circle, which flooded in the 2024 and 2025 monsoons. The airport is 40–45 minutes away, and the area isn't walkable.
2. Phuket Town — best for hospitals without driving
Phuket 101 calls Phuket Town the only area where you can live without a vehicle. Bangkok Hospital Phuket, a JCI-accredited private hospital, is 8–10 minutes away, and the public Vachira Phuket Hospital is across the road. Bangkok Hospital Siriroj and the non-profit Mission Hospital are also in town; Phuket 101 says Mission costs about half as much as Bangkok Hospital Phuket.
Condos run 8,000–15,000 baht and townhouses 15,000–28,000 baht. The nearest good beach is 20–30 minutes away, and Old Town streets flood in heavy rain, so avoid ground-floor units there.
3. Chalong — best for a central base on a budget
Dibuk Hospital, a private BDMS hospital on Chao Fa Road in Chalong, has a 24-hour emergency department, and Phuket 101 says it's cheaper than the main Bangkok Hospital branches. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is 12–18 minutes away. Condos run 12,000–20,000 baht and pool villas 38,000–70,000 baht.
There's no beach, and Phuket 101 says nobody walks anywhere in Chalong. The Chalong Circle jams at school time and at dusk and floods in a bad October.
What would this move really cost you?
Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.
4. Cape Panwa — best for quiet couples near town
Phuket 101 lists retirees and quiet couples among Cape Panwa's residents. It puts a hospital 15 minutes away and lists two-bedroom homes at 15,000–45,000 baht. Evenings are quiet, with bay views and a few resorts.
The shore is shallow and muddy at low tide, and Phuket 101 says nobody swims there. West-coast beaches are 20–45 minutes away.
5. Kamala — best for village beach life
Phuket 101 names village-minded retirees among Kamala's residents. The beach is about 1.5 km of calm sand with lifeguards, condos run 15,000–25,000 baht, and a hospital is about 20 minutes away. Bangkok Phuket Clinic Kamala is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The winding coast road is hard for older drivers in the rain, according to Phuket 101. There's no big supermarket, and hillside water pressure drops from January to April.
Your visa and insurance
The area doesn't change your visa options. Thailand's official portal lists the O-A long-stay visa for applicants aged 50 or over with 800,000 baht in a bank account or 65,000 baht a month in income. The O-A also requires health insurance of at least 3,000,000 baht in total cover, and The Thaiger (updated August 2026) says extensions need the same cover. The Thaiger also notes that the in-country Non-O retirement extension has no insurance requirement. Rules change, so check with the embassy and see our Thailand retirement visa guide.
What to check before you decide
- Find your nearest 24-hour emergency department and drive there at peak time.
- Check direct billing with your insurer for that hospital.
- Ask about flood history in the 2024 and 2025 monsoons.
- Check water supply in the dry season, especially on hillsides.
- Save 1669, the national emergency medical line, plus your hospital's number.
