Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Since 15 September 2026, most visitors to Thailand get 30 days visa-free instead of 60, and the exemption covers tourism only. The old "fly in, look around for two months, then decide" plan no longer fits Thailand. If you want a trial stay longer than a month, sort out a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) or another proper visa from abroad before you book.
This page is for people who have never lived in the region and want a first base that is forgiving: easy to arrive in, easy to get help in, and easy to leave if it does not work out. We cover the cities Cost of Asia tracks in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Bali.
The main trade-off is between ease and cost. The easiest cities to land in tend to cost more, while the cheapest ask you to handle more on your own.
At a glance

How we chose
- Cost: Numbeo's Cost of Living Index by City 2026 Mid-Year, using the Cost of Living Plus Rent column.
- Healthcare: accredited hospitals confirmed on hospital or group websites, plus Numbeo's Health Care Index.
- Visa path: whether a realistic route exists for a trial stay, checked on official or embassy pages.
- Air quality: IQAir data and official haze reports.
Checked on 31 October 2026.
1. Kuala Lumpur — best for the easiest landing
Kuala Lumpur combines big-city services with mid-range costs: its Cost of Living Plus Rent Index is 27.2, against 32.2 for Bangkok. English is widely used in daily life, which lowers the stress of the first months. Gleneagles and Pantai hospitals in the city both hold JCI accreditation, according to IHH Healthcare.
IQAir data cited by Greenpeace Malaysia put Kuala Lumpur's 2025 average PM2.5 at 15.7 µg/m³, down from 17.7 in 2024. The weak spot is seasonal haze: on 25 August 2026, parts of the Klang Valley recorded "unhealthy" API readings. For long-stay options, see our Malaysia digital nomad visa and MM2H guides.
2. Chiang Mai — best for a gentle, low-cost start
Chiang Mai is compact, has a long-established expat community and has the highest Numbeo Health Care Index (85.1) of our cities. Its combined cost index (22.3) is about 30% below Bangkok's.
Plan around two things. First, the smoke season from January to April, which peaks in March, according to IQAir. Second, the visa: with the 30-day visa-free limit, a DTV (five years, up to 180 days per entry, 500,000 baht in funds, no work for Thai employers) is the usual route for remote workers. See our Chiang Mai guide and Thailand DTV guide.
3. Bangkok — best for a big-city first move
If you want every service within reach, Bangkok is hard to beat. Bumrungrad International, Bangkok Hospital and Samitivej all report JCI accreditation, and Bangkok Hospital runs a dedicated expat desk. You get the widest choice of housing, clinics, schools and flights.
It is the most expensive of our cities on Numbeo's Cost of Living Index (43.5), and Numbeo estimates a single person's monthly costs at about $699 before rent. See our Bangkok guide.
What would this move really cost you?
Use your own rent, insurance, transport and visa assumptions. Compare options before committing.
4. Da Nang — best beach city on a budget
Da Nang has the lowest Cost of Living Index (27.2) of our cities, and Numbeo estimates a single person's monthly costs at about $453 before rent. You get a beach and a city of manageable size.
Trade-offs: expect a smaller international community and fewer accredited hospital options than in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform renamed many districts and wards, so addresses on older listings may not match official names. Check the current visa options on our Vietnam visa guide and see our Da Nang guide.
5. Penang — best for a slower pace and low rent
Penang has one of the lowest rent indices in the region (7.9). Numbeo lists a one-bedroom outside the center at about RM1,178 a month. Gleneagles Hospital Penang holds JCI accreditation, and Island Hospital holds MSQH and ACHSI accreditation.
It suits retirees and remote workers who prefer a quieter life. The Numbeo data rests on a small sample (27 contributors in the past year), and haze can reach the island, as it did on 31 August 2026. See our Penang guide.
What to check before you decide
- Confirm your entry rules on the official site the week you book. Thailand's changed in September 2026.
- Book a short-term rental first and sign a long lease only after a few weeks.
- Get a health insurance quote that covers your age and any existing conditions.
- Check the air quality calendar for your arrival month.
- Run your numbers through our budget calculator.
FAQ
What is the easiest country in Southeast Asia to move to?
For a first move, we rate Malaysia the easiest landing because of how widely English is used and its mid-range costs. Thailand is a close second for its healthcare, but plan your visa before arrival.
Can I still try Thailand visa-free?
Yes, for 30 days for tourism. Travelers may request a one-time extension of up to 30 days, subject to approval. Anything longer needs a proper visa.
Which is cheaper for a first move, Vietnam or Thailand?
On Numbeo's 2026 mid-year index, Vietnam's main cities score lower than Thailand's. See our Thailand vs Vietnam comparison.
