Expert take — Cost of Asia editorial team Vietnam's e-visa lasts up to 90 days and cannot be extended from inside the country, so a year in Vietnam on e-visas means leaving and reapplying at least every three months; Malaysia's DE Rantau pass gives up to 24 months for remote workers who qualify. Vietnam's lower daily costs are real, but if you plan to stay a year or more, price the exit flights into the comparison.

This comparison is for remote workers, retirees and families choosing between Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hanoi) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang).

The short version: Vietnam costs less day to day, while Malaysia offers a longer legal stay for remote workers, more English and cleaner air in the capital.

Checked on 4 November 2026.

1. Cost of living — Vietnam is cheaper day to day

Numbeo's everyday estimate for one person is about $100 lower in Ho Chi Minh City than in Kuala Lumpur, and the family-of-four gap is about $400. Rent is less clear-cut: Penang's central one-bedroom (RM1,691) is cheaper than either Vietnamese city. School fees reverse the picture for families: Numbeo's average international primary fee in Ho Chi Minh City is more than double Penang's. Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform renamed many districts and wards, so check listing addresses carefully. See our Vietnam cost of living and Malaysia cost of living guides.

2. Visas — Malaysia for long stays

Vietnam's e-visa costs $25 (single entry) or $50 (multiple entry), lasts up to 90 days and must be renewed from outside the country, according to Emerhub. Citizens of 12 countries, including the UK, France and Germany, also get 45 days visa-free until March 2028, per Vietcetera.

Malaysia's DE Rantau requires $24,000 a year for tech roles or $60,000 for others, runs 3 to 12 months, and can be renewed once for up to 24 months in total. MDEC's FAQ says freelancers may also serve Malaysian clients. Malaysia's Budget 2027 speech announced two more years for holders who reach the limit, but conditions were unpublished when Emerhub reported it on 11 October 2026.

3. English and daily admin — Malaysia

Malaysia ranked 24th worldwide in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index, the highest in Asia; Vietnam ranked 64th. Expect fewer translation steps for leases, clinics and banks in Malaysia.

4. Air, health care and safety — a split decision

Kuala Lumpur scores clearly better than Vietnam's two biggest cities on Numbeo's pollution and health care indices. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City score higher on Numbeo's safety index. These are perception surveys, so visit before you commit.

5. Tax residence — questions for an adviser

Under PwC's summaries, Vietnam can treat you as resident at 183 days or if you have a rented home with a definite lease term, so a long lease may matter as much as days spent. Vietnam's new Personal Income Tax Law (109/2025/QH15) took effect on 1 July 2026 with five bands from 5% to 35%, per LuatVietnam. Malaysia uses 182 days, and PwC says foreign-sourced income received by residents may be exempt until 31 December 2036, subject to conditions. Take these points to a qualified adviser.

  • The cost of exit trips if you choose Vietnam.
  • A written health insurance quote for each country.
  • Current asking rents in the exact neighborhood.
  • Your numbers in our budget calculator.
